Online Seminars Presenting the New Clinical Protocol for Safe Abortion Carried Out in Kyrgyzstan

On September 25, 2020, the Ministry of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic approved the revised National Clinical Protocol for Safe Abortion  via Order No. 759. Several weeks later, on October 20 and 22, two separate online seminars were carried out with medical workers from the north and south of the country.

The new National Clinical Protocol for Safe Abortion is intended to ensure quality abortion care in line with international recommendations for pregnant persons in the Kyrgyz Republic. This is the first time ever in Kyrgyzstan that medical abortion, surgical abortion (manual and electric vacuum aspiration), and procedures for managing complications have been included in one single document. In addition, a completely new chapter was included, outlining the provision of safe abortion during the Covid-19 pandemic, including medical abortion via telemedicine. As recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Protocol should be reviewed every 5 years.

In total, there were 97 participants in the seminar conducted for the southern part of the country and 70 participants in the seminar conducted for the northern part of the country. Participants included Kyrgyz healthcare providers, head of the working group for revising the National Clinical Protocol, Professor Arsen Askerov, the director of the Kyrgyz Family Planning Alliance, Baktygul Bozgorpoeva, and RTC team members, Rodica Comendant and Clay Cook. The seminars were facilitated by Professor Askerov, during which he presented the updated National Clinical Protocol for Safe Abortion, including the pertinent new chapter on safe abortion provision during the Covid-19 pandemic, and discussed mechanisms for monitoring and evaluating abortion care quality. Furthermore, Rodica Comendant presented the most recent safe abortion recommendations from FIGO, NAF, and WHO, including those specific to Covid-19. At the end of the seminars, participants had the opportunity to ask questions and discuss next steps for integrating the modification/additions to the National Clinical Protocol into their medical practice.

The revision of the National Safe Abortion Protocol in Kyrgyzstan has been supported by the Safe Abortion Action Fund as part of the RTC-coordinated project “Bringing the WHO recommendations on safe abortion closer to women, in countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia, by supporting the development of national clinical guidelines and protocols on unwanted pregnancy.”
