A roundtable was held in Kyrgyzstan to summarize the results of a formative study to assess the feasibility of expanding medical abortion services through telemedicine

The roundtable was organized on December 13, 2022, in Bishkek with the participation of representatives of the Regional Training Center, coordinated by the Training Center on Reproductive Health of the Republic of Moldova, representatives of the Ministry of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic, reproductive health service providers, policy makers and other stakeholders. The event was attended by 40 participants in offline format and more than 50 participants in online format on the Zoom Platform.

The purpose of the round table was to summarize the results of the formative study in Kyrgyzstan, as well as to discuss the next steps to improve MA through telemedicine.

The research was conducted in 5 countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, including Kyrgyzstan.

Baktygul Bozgorpoeva, country coordinator of the project presented to the Roundtable participants the data obtained as a result of interviews within the research. The survey was conducted among women’s groups (NGOs), distributors of abortion drugs, decision makers, pharmacists, service providers and potential recipients of services. The results of the study in Kyrgyzstan have shown a positive attitude towards telemedicine; more than 61% of the interviewed women think that telemedicine has advantages.

Further, the participants discussed the opportunities and potential steps for improvement and wider dissemination of medical abortion services through telemedicine services in Kyrgyzstan.

The event was organized within the framework of the project „Setting the stage for regional scaling up of medical abortion via telemedicine in Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA).” with the support of Grand Challenges Canada – The OPTions Initiative.
